Authors

Abstract:

Background & aim: Polycystic ovary syndrom (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders which affect 5-10% of women in reproductive ages. Some of the medicinal plants are able to inhibit of  progressing or exhibit of PCOS. The aim of this study is investigation of  Zizyphus jujube L. fruit's hydroethanolic extract (ZHE) in rats with polycystic ovary syndrome. Methods: In this experimental study, 42 Wistar  immature female rats (3-4 weeks age) were divided in 7 groups randomly: control (0.5ml saline normal, a,p, daily), witness(250mg/kg testosterone enanthate with dissolved in 0.5 ml sesame oil, sc), sham (0.5 ml sesame oil, sc), metformin (250mg/kg testosterone enanthate with dissolved in 0.5 ml sesame oil, sc, +500mg/kg metformin gavaged), treatment 1 with ZHE(250mg/kg testosterone enanthate with dissolved in 0.5 ml sesame oil, sc+400mg/kg ZHE a,p) and  treatment 2 with ZHE(250mg/kg testosterone enanthate with dissolved in 0.5 ml sesame oil, sc+800mg/kg ZHE a,p), treatment 3 (250mg/kg testosterone enanthate four weeks and after ZHE 800mg/kg for 1 week). At the end of examinations all animals were anesthetized with ether and ovary samples were fixed by formalin 10% for histopathological studies. Results: The results of this study showed that testosterone enanthate caused polycystic follicle in rat's ovary. A significant decrease was seen in polycystic ovary in treatment groups with ZHE compared with  the witness group  (P<0.001). Conclusion: Due to decreasing effect of ZHE on polycystic follicle in rats with PCOS, it seemed that Zizyphus jujube has chemical compound such as ascorbic acid, flavonoids, vitamin A and C which therapeutic effect on PCOS in rat.
